Filipino Computer Club boosts computer literacy to OFWs

In an effort to bring technology to the OFWs, the Filipino Computer Club (FCC) will again offer its tuition-free computer training courses and workshops beginning next month. The Filipino Computer Club in Dubai & Northern Emirates headed by Engineer Cherry Pye Torres is spearheading the project that run for ten straight weeks.

The program, organized under the auspices of Philippine Consulate General, Philippine Overseas Labor Office and Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, will start on Oct. 10.

“The three-month virtually free computer training program that we are offering is part of the Philippine government’s continuing efforts to educate our countrymen about the basics of popular computer applications, which they can use at home and at work,” Torres said. “We are pursuing this to train our countrymen with needed computer knowledge and skills currently in demand in the job market,” she said.

Torres said the training is open to all Filipinos in UAE aged 13 years old and above.

She said that the program module will provide basic computer skills training in various computer applications like:

  • Introduction to Information Technology: Basic Computer for Beginners
  • MS Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint & Access
  • Web Development: HTML Coding, Flash Animation & Adobe Photoshop
  • Networking: Essentials & Infrastructure
  • Hardware: PC Configuration, PC Assembly & Practical Networking
  • Personal Development: Speech Craft & Toastmasters meetings
It will also include a comprehensive lecture portion and numerous hands-on/homework activities, which will help participants to apply and practice what they have learned from the lectures. Advanced subjects like networking, Flash Animation, etc. are offered to FCC membership. Annual FCC membership fee is only AED 100.

The classes will be held in 2 venues in Dubai where sessions to be conducted every Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. There will be assigned professional trainer/s in each subject who will conduct the training.

Torres said the last day of training will be the recognition day and participants who will successfully complete the training will be given certificates of completion.

“We are calling on all OFWs to take advantage of this opportunity. We hope that through this program, we will soon see more of the graduates of our computer training programs shifting careers or engaged in a related venture, such as Internet café or computer shop business,” she said.
