DUBAI - Over 700 Filipino expatriates in Dubai and Northern Emirates are taking part in a range of free computer courses, which will run for ten Fridays at Rewaq Cultural Centre in Al Twar 2 and at Abu Bakr Assiddiq Islamic Center in Dubai.

A majority of those participating in the training told Khaleej Times that this would open for them a new career, particularly at this time of economic crisis, when several companies have cut down on their manpower requirement.

Milo Torres of the Filipino Computer Club (FCC), instructor for web development, database and programming, told Khaleej Times that the ongoing short computer courses comprise free-of-charge classes for Filipino expatriates in the emirates.

He said these short courses were intended for Filipinos who wanted to equip themselves with the current software applications using the Windows-based programmes, learn how to develop and maintain web sites, be able to configure and assemble personal computers, and understand the basics of Network Administration.

The courses are being conducted in line with the Philippine government’s Re-integration Programme.

FCC President Cherry Pye Torres, who is a Microsoft-Certified Authorized Instructor herself, explained that the training was designed to provide beginners and new computer users knowledge on the basics of computer operations as well as to give advanced users opportunity to study other applications.

Cherry Pye Torres further stressed that the technical part of the courses covers PC Hardware Configuration and Assembly, and Network Administration.
